A uniform resource locator is a subset of URI which specifies a protocol-specific network resource which can be de-referenced, that is to say accessed.
A URL is the original identifier designed by Tim Berners-Lee which is intended to normalize the representation of (in the original case) the location of Web resources. The pattern was subsequently expanded to the more generic URI.
