Authentication is the aspect of access control concerned with figuring out who a principal (usually a person) is, or otherwise proving who they claim they are, should they be making such a claim.

Authentication is the part of access control concerned with verifying that a person is who they say they are. A conventional way to authenticate is with a system of accounts, each with a username and password.
